Private and public documents pertaining to the Huelga schools of Houston, which were created in response to Houston Independent School District's school desegregation plans. The documents principally cover Joe Torres and the Huelga school at Juan Marcos Presbyterian Church, which he headed. The strike was initiated on August 31, 1970, as a protest to the pairing plan of HISD. It ended in September of that year, and was renewed in January, 1971. In February, 1971, the strike evolved into a boycott when the Huelga schools were created. These schools were held at three churches where volunteeer teachers and room mothers helped teach the Mexican American students. The boycott would eventually go on until the end of the 1972 school year.
